How to Spa : Make the Best of Your Spa Day

A day at the spa can be enhanced by preparing your body ahead of time. Here are some tips to make the best of this special day.

We all look forward to a day of pure relaxation and pampering at the spa. While most consider it a special treat, there are in fact health benefits, both emotional and physical, to a day of pampering and decompressing. Taking the waters has been a tradition in Europe for hundreds of years and while most of us do not have access to natural springs and the luxurious spas that have grown up around them, we can all benefit from a day at the local spa. Here are some tips on how to prepare for the much-awaited day:

Eat a light breakfast

If possible, prepare a detoxing juice consisting of one whole organic beetroot, stem and leaves removed but saved, one organic apple and two organic carrots. You may add the beetroot leaves at the end. This is a wonderful way of detoxifying the liver. Another idea would be to begin the day with a glass of warm water and lemon juice, allow twenty minutes and follow with a light breakfast consisting of fruit salad and a little organic granola. No dairy to clog up the system!

Prepare the body

If possible, wax or shave your legs a few days before your spa treatment so as not to provoke any skin irritation. Be sure not to use a heavy lotion before you go to the spa as if you are getting a massage, the therapist will most likely be using an oil. It is a good idea to do a light body brushing (use a boars hair or natural bristle brush and brush towards the heart) before the treatment as it will get rid of the dead skin on the surface and promote lymph drainage.

At the spa

If there is a steam room or sauna available at the spa, make use of it. It is best to do this before your treatment as the steam will open the pores and detox the body. It will also relax you and allow you to enjoy the massage or body treatment even more. Make sure to drink a few glasses of water after the sauna and make use of the rest lounge if there is one available before your treatment

After the treatment

Make sure you allow yourself time to relax after a day or even a morning of pampering. Delay your re entry into you busy world and if your spa allows it, make use of their facilities to linger a little for a cup of tea after changing.

A day at the spa is a wonderful way to get together with friends and catch up while promoting your own emotional and physical health by decompressing and detaching from your daily schedule. Some spas have loyalty rewards so be sure to sign up for them and look for specials. Make it a healthy habit!
